Interest Check: Aluoberseite für CoolerMaster Radpid-i und Novatouch

Die Rapid-i (TKL mit Cherry-Schaltern) und die Novatouch (TKL mit Topre-Switches) von CoolerMaster genießen einen guten Ruf. Und sie haben noch eine Gemeinsamkeit: das Case-Oberteil ist geometrisch gleich.
Bei beiden besteht es jedoch aus Kunststoff: einmal mit, einmal ohne Softtouch-Oberfläche.

In der Mecha-Welt eigentlich immer die bestmögliche Haptik das oberste Ziel. Daher setzen viele Enthusiasten auf PBT-Tastenkappen – und Metallgehäuse.
Tastaturen mit solchen Gehäusen ab Werk sind aber selten und oft will man z.B. einen anderen Formfaktor oder ganz spezielle Schalter. Daher gibt es des öfteren Group Buys (Gruppenkäufe) für Metallgehäuse.

Und hier ist unser Vorschlag: statt des Plastik-Oberteils soll es eines aus Aluminium geben, welches kompatibel mit der Novatouch und der Rapid-i ist. Bei beiden Tastaturen wären so die Oberseite, die Vorderseite, links und rechts komplett und ein großer Teil der Hinterseite mit Alu verkleidet. Die Unterseite bleibt wie gehabt.
Ein Originalteil wurde bereits laser-gescannt, die CAD-Datei ist in Arbeit und ein möglicher Fertiger in Deutschland mit entsprechendem CNC-Equipment ist auch schon gefunden.
Ganz günstig wird das nicht, Qualität kostet eben. Aber es sollte auch günstiger sein als andere ähnliche Groupbuys, da ja nur ein Teil (die Schalen-Oberseite) gefräst werden soll.

Jetzt also die Frage an alle: Wer will?
Dies ist ein unverbindlicher Interest Check, bitte schreibt hier in die Kommentare ob ihr prinzipiell interessiert seid (und zu welchen Konditionen). Zum Groupbuy, d.h. zur definitiven Bestellung, wird es natürlich noch weitere Infos zum endgültigen Preis usw. geben. Liefert gerne auch Infos, ob ihr z.B. eine gebürstete oder glatte Oberfläche bevorzugen würdet.

Both the Rapid-i (TKL with MX switches) and the Novatouch (TKL, Topre switches) have a solid reputation and a striking similarity: the top case’s geometry is the same. Only difference is that while one has a softtouch finish, the other one has a matte finish.

In the world of mechanical keyboards usually the prime objective is superior haptics. That’s why many enthusiast like PBT keycaps and metal cases. However, as keyboards normally aren’t equipped like this from stock, there often are group buys.

So here is our plan: instead of the plastic top case we want to create one from aluminum, which would be compatible with the Novatouch and the Rapid-i.
On both keyboards that new case would mean all-aluminum clad top, front, left and right side plus a large section on the back. The bottom would stay as it is.
The original part has already been laser-scanned, the CAD is in the works and a potential manufacturer with the proper CNC equipment in Germany has been found.
It won’t be really cheap as quality is never cheap. However, we anticipate it to be less expensive than other case group buys, as only a top case is made instead of two parts. Worldwide shipping is actually possible per se, but as you certainly know that can get a little expensive itself.

So, now the big question: Who wants?
This is a pretty non-commital interest check, so please write a comment down below if you are interested. You are very welcome to add details such as preferred finish (e.g. matte, brushed) or maximum amount you would spend.
When the group buy starts, of course we will provide more information, by then we will know the exact pricing etc.

  3. Großes Interesse! Ein mal auf jeden Fall. Bei verschiedenen Farben, genau wie akuji, auch gerne eine Zweite. 🙂

    Den Preis für so etwas kann ich schwer abschätzen, würde aber wohl bei 50-80 Euro (je nach Qualität) sofort zuschlagen, darüber wohl noch mal drüber nachdenken.

  4. Wäre schon interessant, eine Aluoberseite die zu weiß-blauen Kappen passt.
    Also vl. eine gebürstete blau-eloxierte Version zu max. 50€?!

  5. …bin natürlich dabei! Mir wäre ein komplettes Gehäuse zwar lieber aber trotzdem 1 Stück mindestens, bei Farbauswahl evtl. auch 2 Stück. Ein Dunkles (Bordeaux)-Rot oder dunkles Grün fände ich neben Schwarz super, am besten in aloxierter Oberfläche. Blau ist eher nicht so mein Ding.

      In the first step we are trying to keep costs and complexity down, that’s why we went for the only top case first. We will see how things go and then, well, we’ll see 😉

    • Completely agree… that matte finish on the Novatouch / Rapid I is a finger print magnet. I painted my NovaTouch but obviously aluminum would be far better quality.

  13. Defenately interested if a Phantom PCB will fit too. Any news about the pricing?

    I’m from Hungary so not mainland German, but the shipping will be cheaper at least. 😀

    • Ich muss leider vermelden, dass die CAD-Zeichung immer noch nicht fertig ist.
      Aus dieser wird dann der Prototyp und von dem gibt’s dann Bilder – sobald eben möglich 😉

  26. Hab auch Interesse, wobei ich nicht mehr als ~80€ ausgeben wollen würde.

    SCHWARZES Aluminium wäre mein Absoluter Favorit, wobei ich das gute Stück auch in „silber“ nehmen würde. Hoffe bin nicht alleine mit meinem all in black Faible 😉

    • Nachtrag: gebürstet würde ich vorziehen, da es imho bnesser aussieht (das ist geschmackssache), aber definitiv weniger Anfällig für Fingerabdrücke etc. ist
